Savior Called a Criminal

Readings for Sunday, November 20, 2016 — Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

2 Samuel 5:1-3; Psalm 122:1-5; Colossians 1:12-20; Luke 23:35-43

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The reading from Second Samuel describes the kingship of David. The tribes of Israel recognize him as sharing their “flesh and bones.” As an ancestor of David, Jesus is our king who shares our flesh and bones. How does the humanity of Jesus relate to his kingship?

  • The reading from Paul’s letter to the Colossians describes Jesus’ sovereignty over heaven and earth. What are we affirming when we claim Christ as our king?

  • Jesus is our king, yet he is treated as a criminal in today’s reading from the gospel of Luke. What does Jesus’ willingness to endure the cross for all of humanity tell us about power and greatness?
