Near and Far

Readings for July 18 — 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 23:1-6; Psalm 23:1-6; Ephesians 2:13-18; Mark 6:30-34

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • Have you ever needed to get away for awhile from all of the demands on your time, energy, and attention? Were you able to do so? How did the break affect your daily life when you jumped back in?
  • Has your heart ever been “moved with pity” by someone’s need that was right in front of you? Have you ever given up your own rest or plans in order to serve someone in love? How did you serve others in love?
  • The psalm today is typically read at funerals. Why do you think this is? Can you think of another area of life where its words might be applicable?
  • Think of a time when you encountered a “bad shepherd.” Think of a time when you encountered a “good shepherd.” When have you experienced a community coming together like the flock gathered by the good shepherd?
