Give to God

Readings for October 22, 2017

Isaiah 25:1, 4-6; Psalm 96:1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10; 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5B; Matthew 22:15-21

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • In the first reading, God says through Isaiah, “I am the LORD, there is no other.” Are there things in your life that take God’s proper place in your mind? In your heart? How can you recognize when other “gods” begin to take up God’s place?
  • Jesus admonishes the Pharisees in the Gospel: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” What does belong to God? How can we praise and show reverence to the One who gives us our very being? What are some things that you can do in your everyday life to give thanks to God for all that you have?
  • St. Paul writes in the first letter to the Thessalonians that “Our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit.” What particular fruit of the Spirit  (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) do you feel you most greatly possess? How can you use that gift to give back this week?
