Readings for Sunday, January 17 — Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 62:1-5; Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; John 2:1-11

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The first reading begins with the prophet’s refusal to be silent until Jerusalem has been vindicated and is no longer looked upon as forsaken. In our world, who needs vindication? Who needs us to refuse to be silent on their behalf?

  • Paul talks about gifts we receive through the Holy Spirit in his first letter to the church at Corinth. What gifts has God granted you? How are you being called to use these gifts in your parish, community, and world?

  • Mary instructs the servers at the wedding feast in Cana to do whatever Jesus tells them. What does this passage tell us about Mary as an intercessor? What keeps us from doing what Jesus says?
