St. Thomas, often called “Doubting Thomas,” was one of the 12 Apostles to follow Jesus during his life. Though a devout follower, Thomas is best known for the episode that gave him his nickname, namely his doubt that the other Apostles had actually seen Jesus risen on Easter Sunday. In conjunction with his disbelief at his friend’s’ testimony, at the Lord’s second apparition roughly a week later, Jesus showed “Doubting Thomas” the nail wounds in his hands and let the apostle touch the wounds in his hands and side. Following Pentecost, Thomas went to evangelize the Parthians, Medes, and Persians, eventually reaching India. He was martyred at Calamine, and is honored with a feast day July 3.
