Saints For Our Times

St. Matthias

Table of Contents

St. Matthias, the “13th apostle,” was chosen by Peter and the other apostles after Jesus’ Ascension to Heaven. He replaced Judas so that there would still be 12 apostles (as 12 is a very important number biblically). Choosing him, however, was not easy. Thankfully, St. Peter developed some guidelines to help pick the new apostle. He decided that the person they chose would have to be someone that was a disciple of Christ from the time of his baptism all the way through to his ascension. Out of the 120 people at the apostles’ disposal, only two fit this description: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. To choose between the two of them, lots were cast (to best discern God’s will), and Matthias was selected as the new apostle. He is mentioned in Scripture only in the episode of his appointment, though tradition tells us he enthusiastically accepted the duties of being an apostle and was a firm supporter of Christ even when it was unpopular. His feast day is May 14.
