Saint Antonio Vieira was born in 1608 in Portugal. He moved to Brazil at a young age and worked with indigenous people and African slaves after joining the Jesuits. In 1641, Antonio returned to Portugal and began preaching around Europe about tolerance for Jewish converts to Christianity. He continued to dedicate his life to protecting converts, indigenous people, and slaves until he died at the age of 89. He was canonized in 1897.
Questions for Reflection:
- Who are the indigenous people in your area? How can you learn more about them?
- How can you reach out to native people and work together to solve problems in your community?
