There is not much information about the past of Saint Matthias. However, the Acts of the Apostles say that Matthias had been a follower of Christ since Jesus’ Baptism. In the following days after Jesus’ Ascension, the Apostles began looking for a replacement for Judas. Calling upon the Lord for guidance, the Apostles eventually selected Matthias. By doing so, the Apostles returned to 12 members, which represents the 12 tribes of Israel. Saint Matthias died in 80 A.D. He is known as the patron saint of carpenters and alcoholism. His feast day is May 14.
