Are we too tied to our mobile devices? Our computers? Even television? Challenge young adults to take just one week off from technology outside of work. If this seems impossible, make suggestions like limiting cell phone use to calls only or a fast from Facebook or other social media. Help young adults set a challenging goal and then ask them to keep a journal of their successes and difficulties and to notice their feelings early on and then again later in the week. Suggest that they fill some of their technology-free time catching up in person with friends and family, reading a book, or reflecting on the weekly readings. Start and finish the Technology Fast with a prayer service. Use the first one to model ways to pray during the quiet of their day. Use the closing service to reflect on how the week changed the way they will use technology in the future. If the young adults seem receptive to the idea, suggest the idea of a “technology sabbath,” where every week for one day from sundown one day to sundown the next, they fast from technology.
