Symbols of the Season

When we think of “Christmas,” we picture the Nativity, Christmas trees, candy canes, gingerbread houses, and more. There are countless symbols of the season that remind us of not only its religious significance, but themes of family, love, hope, and peace. In recent years, there’s also been a surge of what some consider more “tacky” Christmas symbols — think about ugly Christmas sweaters and ties that are the themes of Christmas parties or the decorations that might cover our lawns. Share this article with young adults and ask them about the symbols of the season that carry the most meaning for them:

  • What tacky Christmas tradition has been part of your celebration of the season?
  • What Christmas symbols or traditions have the most meaning for you? Why do you have such a connection with that symbol or tradition?
  • What new Christmas traditions will become part of your holiday season this year?
