St. John of Capistrano

Picture of Saint John of Capistrano.

St. John of Capistrano (Feast Day: October 23) was one of the greatest Franciscan preachers of the 15th century who led the army that liberated Belgrade from a Turkish invasion. In 1412, he became the magistrate of Perugia, Papal States, where he was imprisoned after a civil quarrel. An emotional conversion resulted in him becoming a Franciscan after his release in 1416. He used his time to restore doctrinal harmony and promote education. He was also the principal force in founding the Franciscan Observants. In 1451, he was sent to Austria by Pope Nicholas V to convert the Hussites.

Questions for Reflection:

  • St. John of Capistrano only became dedicated to faith after a difficult time in his life. What hard times have prompted you to become more dedicated to your faith?
  • St. John also dedicated his time to restoring doctrinal harmony and promoting education. How can you connect your personal work to your faith? Does your faith motivate you to work for others in your free time?
