St. Denis was born in the Roman Empire, and he and six other missionaries traveled to evangelize in modern-day France. Denis, sent to Lutetia (modern Paris) as its bishop, arrived with two companions, Priest Rusticus and Deacon Eleutherius. They established a church on an island in the Seine River and began preaching the Gospel, gaining many converts, which incited the envy of local druids. These pagan priests, fearing for their gods, demanded Roman authorities to arrest Denis and his companions. Despite enduring severe torture, they remained steadfast in their faith and were ultimately beheaded on a hill that was sacred to the druids. After his execution, Denis miraculously picked up his head and walked several miles to his desired burial site, preaching forgiveness to his persecutors along the way. Pope Pius V added Saint Denis’ feast day to the Roman Calendar in 1568, but Christians had celebrated the martyr since at least 800.
Questions for Reflection:
- St. Denis set out to evangelize in unknown territory, against all odds. Looking back at times of hardship in your life, how has God shown up to support you?
- Even death could not stop St. Denis from serving his purpose for the Lord. How does God call you to persevere when you feel you have failed?
