St. Barbara (273-306) Heliopolis, Phoenicia, to a wealthy pagan named Dioscorus. After her mother’s death, Dioscorus kept Barbara isolated in a tower to protect her, allowing only pagan teachers to see her. Privately, Barbara dedicated her life to God and chose virginity. As she grew older, she refused her father’s attempts to marry her. After a chance to explore the outside world, she met other Christians and was baptized. She also influenced the construction of a bathhouse with three windows symbolizing the Holy Trinity, which became a site of miracles. When Dioscorus discovered her faith, he attempted to kill her, but she escaped. Eventually, she was captured, tortured, and steadfastly refused to renounce her beliefs, even when subjected to brutal punishments. On December 4th, she was beheaded by her father, who was later struck by lightning along with the prefect Martianus as a divine punishment for their actions. Saint Barbara is revered as a symbol of faith and courage in the face of persecution.
