Hosting a board game night is a great and easy way to have a social event for your young adult community. It’s nice having this event in your back pocket for moments when leadership is too worn out to fully plan something, but still want to have a regularly scheduled social event.
Now, when I say “board games,” it might conjure images of Monopoly or Life, the classics of board games. However, the world of board games has exploded in the last few decades. Multiple new styles and studios of board games have come about. One of the most popular games to come out of this growth of new games is Settlers of Catan. Odds are, at least one of your young adults owns a copy.
You might also have a board game enthusiast in your community who is willing to show up with a duffel bag full of options for folks to enjoy. Having a multitude of options can help as A) everyone can find a game they want to play, and B) you can host a larger crowd broken up playing multiple different games. This can help create an environment that is chill and allows folks in the community to organically interact with each other and develop friendships.
At social events, it’s always a good plan to have snacks provided. However, with board games, you may want to think about what snacks you are providing more than you would at other events. Pretzels are a great option instead of some other chips with a powdery flavor coating; you don’t want Cheeto dust or pizza grease all over your board game. Any snacks that are shareable and won’t make much of a mess are the best way to go for these events.
