Young adults with kids can add to and benefit from young adult events, but more often than not, they feel like these spaces are not created for them. Whether it’s an event scheduled during their child’s bedtime or an event that isn’t in a family-friendly setting, parents may feel left out from this community. By taking the following steps, you can think about the ways in which you can welcome and include parents.
Invite and get to know parents
Parents may not join a young adult ministry event because they don’t know they are welcome in that space. Putting a simple message such as, “Parents are encouraged and welcomed to join” on event descriptions can be a great way to make this invitation to parents very clear. Additionally, personal invites are an even better way to invite parents to events. By going up to a new parent, you can personally invite them to young adult ministry events and express that they are valued and wanted within the community.
Host family-friendly events
Consider family-friendly places that would benefit all people. Whether you’re meeting at the church, a park, a restaurant, or someone’s home, consider how it could be comfortable for kids: Is there food for kids to eat? Is there a changing table in the bathroom? Is there a place where a mother could nurse? Is the event early enough for kids’ bedtime? If an event is late at night, is there an option for parents to watch a livestreamed session from home? If you’re hosting an event just for adults, are there volunteers available to babysit the children during that time? Consider the needs of a parent with children – and don’t be afraid to ask the parents directly what would help them feel more comfortable.
Welcome parents as they are
Parents with children often have busy schedules. If a parent is going to make it to a young adult ministry event, know that they may show up late, have to leave early, or need to step away to feed their child or change a diaper. Let parents know that they are welcomed no matter when they show up or for how long. For parents to feel included, they must be welcomed to come as they are.
By inviting parents, hosting family-friendly events, and fostering a welcoming space, parents have the opportunity to attend and feel comfortable at young adult ministry events.
