Description: Young adults gather to watch movies and discuss relevant issues highlighted in the films. Discussion ideas invite young adults to consider these issues in light of their own experiences and Church teaching.
Get Ready
- Prep Time: This program requires a couple of hours of advance preparation to preview the movie and prepare discussion questions. The evening of the gathering about 30 minutes are needed to prepare the space.
- Volunteers Needed: One group facilitator for every eight participants.
- Ideal Group Size: 10 or so, if held at someone’s home; 30-40 in a larger space.
- Who is this for? This is a great program for all young adults. It has been especially successful with those in their early to mid-20s.
- Supplies: Movie, DVD player, television or screen with projector, depending on the group size.
- Reserve the Space: This program can easily be held in someone’s home. It also can be successful in a parish center or other public space. The key is to ensure that the space is an adequate size for the number of people expected and has the appropriate audio and visual requirements. (Please note: To show a film that is intended for a home audience in a public place, including a parish, you must have a Public Performance License. You can find details about the license here.)
- Publicize the Program:
- Create a Facebook event.
- Publicize through parish newsletters and bulletins, diocesan newspapers.
- Create flyers and distribute them in public spaces young adults frequent: gyms, Laundromats, coffee shops, bookstores, etc.
- Word of mouth!
Prayer for Program Planner: Lord God, provider of all that we have and all that we are, help us to gain knowledge and insight from this time that we have together. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Community Building: This program brings groups of young adults together to engage in good films and good discussion. Good food also helps build community!
