Expressing Our Love for God

Readings for Sunday, September 8, 2019 — 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

Wisdom 9:13-18B; Psalm 90:3-6, 12-17; Philemon 9-10, 12-17; Luke 14:25-33

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The reading from the Book of Wisdom highlights the limits of human understanding and our need for the Holy Spirit to reveal heavenly things to us. We are often tempted to speak on God’s behalf. How can we guard ourselves against this temptation yet still proclaim the revealed truth of the  life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ?
  • One of the petitions of today’s psalm is for the wisdom and grace to lead a full and productive life. It emphasizes the preciousness and fragility of each new day that we are given. What can we do on a daily basis to show our appreciation to God for another day of life? What are you especially grateful for?
  • Jesus makes the difficult claim that his disciples must be willing to forsake everything they value to follow him. How do we reconcile Jesus’ words with the Church’s teaching on the significance of family? What are some things that you value in your life and do you easily see yourself giving them up for Jesus?
