The Suffering Servant

Readings for Sunday, October 21 — 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 53:10-11; Psalm 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10:35-45

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • How does it make you feel when you remember Jesus’ suffering because of his love for you?
  • When you think about Jesus being both fully human and fully divine, what questions arise for you? Does this concept confuse you in any ways? How do you think his humanity and divinity showed in his life as he grew up, during his public ministry, and through his Passion?
  • Do you see yourself as a servant? Whom do you serve? How can you become a better servant?
  • We come back, again, to the image of a servant, an image we have visited often in this Ordinary Time. How has your understanding of being a servant evolved during this time and in light of this week’s readings?
