Readings for Sunday, January 5 — Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8,10-13; Ephesians 3:2-3A,5-6; Matthew 2:1-12

Suggested Reflection Questions:

• Today’s reading from the Prophet Isaiah seeks to fill the people of God with hope at the coming radiant glory of the Lord. We proclaim this light of the world has come in Jesus Christ. How are we called to live as people who claim to follow the Light?
• The psalmist sings of the rule of the holy king who brings peace and justice and who all the nations of the earth adore. Those in power are called to serve and honor him. What does this demand of us in our own spheres of influence? What does this demand of Christians in political leadership?
• Three wise men arrive from the East seeking to pay homage to the new king of the Jews. These men travel an enormous distance to prostrate themselves before a tiny baby and his young mother. How are we called to imitate these three magi in our own life of faith? How are we called to seek Jesus? What gifts are we called to bring?
