Encountering the Risen Lord

Readings for Sunday, April 21 — The Resurrection of the Lord

Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8; John 20:1-9

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • On Easter Sunday, the liturgy is particularly exultant and celebratory. After the austerity of Lent, our parishes will be filled with flowers, music, and triumphant “Alleluias.” With the psalmist, we proclaim, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Why do we rejoice at the Resurrection? What does it mean in general? What does it mean to you? How can you try to be celebratory this week?
  • Both readings from Paul’s letters speak of newness and transformation. Now that our fast of Lent has been completed and we celebrate the Resurrection, we invite a sense of newness into our lives. What lessons did you learn this Lent? How do they help you understand Easter? How can you use these lessons to be a joyful witness to the Resurrection in your community? What newness can you embrace in your life this week?
  • The Gospel readings for our Easter celebration describe the friends of Jesus discovering his empty tomb. He is risen! Have you experienced a loss this year — a friend, family member, or even a relationship or job? What does the empty tomb symbolize for you? What does it tell us about God? With those who you lost, do you feel as if they are risen to you? How so?
