Part of the Family

Readings for November 5, 2017

Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10; Psalm 131:1, 2, 3; 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13; Matthew 23:1-12

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • In the first reading, the prophet Malachi asks, “Have we not all the one father? Has not the one God created us?” Try to recall a time when you have forgotten that we are all children of God. What were the effects? How does this knowledge of our siblinghood in God impact your view of others, particularly those you find it difficult to love, or even like?
  • The psalmist sings that he has found his peace in the Lord; that his “heart is not proud.” Consider this, and reflect that being children of God means that we are adopted sons and daughters of the King: royalty. What does this mean for our relationships with one another? Why should being a child of God inspire humility, rather than pride?
  • In the passage from Matthew, Jesus admonishes the Scribes and the Pharisees for their pride and hypocrisy. “All their works are performed to be seen.” By exalting themselves, what is their impact on their brothers and sisters, fellow sons and daughters of the King? What can you do this week to recognize your own identity as part of God’s family? To honor those around you as part of that family too?
