St. John Baptist De La Salle

Canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900 and named patron saint of teachers by Pope Pius XII in 1950, St. John Baptist De La Salle (not to be confused with St. John the Baptist) is perhaps best known for his legacy in schools. Like the Jesuits, St. John’s “Brothers of the Christian Schools” (also known as the De La Salle Brothers) sought to spread education to the masses, particularly the children and the poor. The fruits of De La Salle’s efforts still stand to this day, as the Brothers’ network of schools spans over more than 1,000 educational institutes in 84 different countries across the globe. In honor of the feast of St. John Baptist De La Salle (April 7), try to show your thanks for those who have been teachers to you throughout your life. Pray for St. John Baptist De La Salle’s blessing upon you and your teachers on this day.

 Questions for Reflection

  • Who are the teachers in your life? Think not only of the teachers you have in school, but anyone who has been a mentor or guide to you.

  • To whom have you been a teacher? How have you shaped the way these people learn and live?

  • What do you possess that is worth teaching to others? What skills, talents, advice, or lessons will you pass along to those who look up to you?
