• The Wisdom of Ben Sira (commonly referred to as Sirach, the Greek version of the author’s name) is comprised of the divinely inspired words of a Jewish sage and teacher, primarily on the topic of moral instruction. Today’s reading focuses on the virtue of humility. In today’s culture of reality TV stars, social media, and drawing constant attention to oneself, what does it mean to be humble?

• The psalmist sings of a God who protects widows, orphans, the poor, and the imprisoned. God makes the land and the people whole and restores justice. What does God’s special care for the vulnerable require of those who profess to love God?

• Jesus, dining at the home of a notable Pharisee, observes how eagerly the guests take the places of honor at the host’s table. He tells them a parable to illustrate the significance of humility and to encourage them to extend hospitality to those from whom they cannot hope to gain status or prestige by inviting (i.e. the poor and vulnerable). How does Jesus exhibit humility in his interactions with people from all walks of life? How can we imitate his humility in our daily lives?
