St. Francis

Saint Francis of Assisi was born in 1183 to a rich clothing merchant. In 1204, while traveling to war, Francis had a vision and renounced his lavish lifestyle in order to follow God. Soon after, he started the Franciscans, the Order of Poor Ladies (Poor Clares), and the Third Order of Saint Francis. Francis is documented as the first person ever to receive the stigmata, the wounds of the crucified Lord. He is the patron saint of animals and the environment. His feast day is October 4.
