Readings for Sunday, November 2 — The Commemoration of All Souls

Wisdom 3:1-9; Psalm 23:1-3A, 3B-4, 5, 6; Romans 5:5-11; John 6:37-40

Suggested Reflection Questions:

• In the first reading, we hear the line “The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.” Do you take comfort in this verse? As we celebrate the the Commemoration of All Souls, who is on your mind? What do you gather from this reading, in thinking about them?

• The psalm this Sunday is very well-known as one that is often read at funerals. Have someone read it aloud, and this time, close your eyes. As you hear it read, try to focus on the imagery that is unfolding as the psalm goes on. This psalm tells us a lot about the forces of evil and the nature of good. What message came to you as you meditated on the words of this psalm, perhaps one that has never occurred to you before?

• In looking at the second reading, we are reminded that Christ died for us not because we were perfect but he died, even though we are sinners. What does this tell us about the nature of Christ’s love? Have you ever loved someone, in spite of the type of person they were or are? How did your faith play a role in that?
